Essential Safety Tips for Drainage Contractors

Jetter-Safety-Header-blog

Operating drain jetting equipment comes with significant risks, making safety a top priority for professionals in the industry. Whether you are an experienced operator or new to the field, understanding the importance of proper equipment, practices, and training can prevent accidents and protect lives. This blog highlights key safety measures, features of Andy Guest equipment, and the training available to support safe and effective operations.

Safety Equipment

Using the right safety equipment is essential when operating drain jetting machinery. Water jets, even at low pressure, can cause severe injuries.

The Correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Drain Jetting Operations

PPE minimises risks and ensures safer operations.

  • Full-face shields or helmets with chin guards.
  • Goggles to protect against splashes and debris.
  • Hearing protection is necessary for noise levels exceeding 109 dB.
  • Heavy-duty, waterproof gloves safeguard hands.
  • Waterproof high-visibility clothing protects the body.
  • Rubber spray boots with toe and metatarsal guards protect feet.
  • Hard hats provide vital head protection in the field.

Jetting Equipment for Safer Operations

Safety accessories further enhance operator security. These ar a few examples of accessories designed to enhance safety:

  • Leader Hose or Warning Ring: A visual indicator when the nozzle approaches a drain entrance during use.
  • Hose Meter Counter: Tracks the length of the hose inside a drain, aiding in precise control.
  • Whip Checks: Prevent hoses from whipping back in case of connection failure.
  • Tiger Tail: These types of protectors reduce wear on hoses at pipe openings.
  • Roller-Guides: Placed by the drain or gully opening, the hose remains protected from sharp edges and other obstacles.

Safety Features of Andy Guest Equipment

The Jetting Machine

Andy Guest integrates advanced safety technologies into its equipment to ensure operator well-being. Yanmar’s new smart engine technology, standard with the 5-Series water jetter, allows operators to monitor engine performance through an interactive LED display. This panel provides real-time readings of engine RPMs, temperatures, pressures, and working hours, while advanced diagnostics warn of potential malfunctions, reducing the risk of accidents.

Additional safety features include anti-freeze valves for safe operation in cold conditions and robust covers to prevent debris ingress and user contact with moving parts. These covers also help to reduce engine and pump noise, making them suitable for urban and residential areas. They are available as optional add-ons.

The Remote Control Unit

The 5-channel Andy Guest radio remote enhances safety and control during remote jetting operations. This user-friendly system offers increased bandwidth and reception range, making it highly effective in challenging environments. The kit includes a transmitter unit, receiver, charger, and antenna.

All Andy Guest machines have prominently placed emergency stop buttons for quick and easy access. Remote control handsets also feature emergency stop functions, adding an extra layer of protection.

Lighting, Heating and Welfare

Lighting solutions, including warning beacons and work area lights, enhance visibility in low-light conditions. Ergonomically designed controls minimise strain, allowing operators to work efficiently and comfortably. Built-in safety devices such as pressure gauges, automatic cut-offs, and hose safety mechanisms ensure accidents are less likely to occur.

A heater can be helpful when travelling between jobs in cold weather to prevent water in the lines from freezing. If you don’t have a night heater, consider storing your equipment in a heated garage or, at minimum, covering it with a blanket.

Onboard welfare stations can also be installed in vehicles. These stations, equipped with handwashing facilities, eyewash stations, and first aid kits, are highly recommended.

Safety Advice & Practices

Conducting a thorough risk assessment is a critical step before starting operations. Operators should inspect the worksite for hazards such as slippery surfaces, loose debris, or excessive noise levels. Barriers and warning signs should be deployed around the work area to protect the public and prevent unauthorised access.

Safe operation of jetting equipment requires strict adherence to guidelines:

  • Only trained and authorised personnel should handle the machinery.
  • Hoses and attachments must be inspected for damage or blockages before use.
  • Proper ventilation is crucial when using equipment in enclosed spaces.
  • Operators should always stay within the pressure marked on the manometer and must depressurise equipment before maintenance or concluding a task.
  • Hygiene practices are also essential to minimise health risks.
  • Jetter water tanks should be cleaned every six months using water heated above 70 °C to prevent bacterial contamination.
Jetter-Training

Jetter Training

Comprehensive training ensures the safe and effective use of high-pressure jetting equipment. Andy Guest offers courses certified by the Water Jetting Association (WJA), accredited by City & Guilds, and recognised by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

The training begins with a one-day Safety Awareness course covering health and safety standards, operational procedures, and PPE requirements. Participants must pass a 20-question test to receive certification.

The second day focuses on drain and sewer cleaning techniques. This practical training combines classroom instruction with hands-on exercises, teaching participants how to operate equipment safely and troubleshoot issues effectively.

Training offers numerous benefits. WJA-certified qualifications enhance employability and compliance with industry standards. They also support workforce retention by ensuring a high level of skill and operational efficiency. Many contractors and organisations require certification as a prerequisite for employment.

Andy Guest ensures operators can work confidently and securely by prioritising safety through equipment, practices, and training.
